Attracting birds to your back yard is easy. You just need to give them what they want and need. So giving them water is a good start. Most living creatures know that moving water is safer to use then standing water. A traditional birdbath is going to have standing water.
There are several products that will allow you to keep the water moving. A battery powered water wiggler will keep the water moving with a soft ripple twenty four hours a day using two D batteries. This is an inexpensive option that works well.
The second option is a solar birdbath insert. These inserts have a solar plate that is placed on the bottom of the bird bath. Attached to the plate are tubes with different decorations that allow the water to be pumped up and fall back to the birdbath to create movement in the water. We carry several different designs featuring birds, frogs and dragonflies.
A third option is install a solar bird bath fountain. This is a conventional birdbath with a built in solar powered fountain head that creates a gentle spray. Many of these fountains have a hidden reservoir that holds extra water and maintains the proper level of water in the main bowl. The water is constantly recirculated keeping fresh water for the birds to drink and splash.
The final option is to keep the water in an insulated covered container. This does not keep the water moving but it does keep it from freezing in temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of the cover giving a limited surface area exposed to the elements the water is also kept clean.
